Chapter 9 ॥नवभोऽध्याम्॥

अष्टावक्र उवाच ॥
कृ ताकृ त े च द्वन्द्वातन कदा शान्तातन कस्य वा ।
एवं ऻात्वेह तनवेदाद्भव त्यागऩयोऽव्रती ॥ ९-१॥
aṣṭāvakra uvāca
kṛtākṛte ca dvandvāni kadā śāntāni kasya vā
evaṁ jñātveha nirvedād bhava tyāgaparo'vratī
Ashtavakra: Knowing when the dualism of things done and
undone has been put to rest, or the person for whom they occur
has, then you can here and now go beyond renunciation and
obligations by indifference to such things.
कस्यातऩ तात धन्यस्य रोकचष्टे ावरोकनात ।्
जीतवतच्छे ा फबु ऺु ा च फबु त्सु ोऩशभ् गता् ॥ ९-२॥
kasyāpi tāta dhanyasya lokaceṣṭāvalokanāt
jīvitecchā bubhukṣā ca bubhutsopaśamaḥ gatāḥ

Rare indeed, my son, is the lucky man whose observation of the
world's behavior has led to the extinction of his thirst for living,
thirst for pleasure and thirst for knowledge.
अतनत्य ं सवभभ वे दे ं ताऩत्रमदूतषत ं ।
असयं तनतन्दतं हेमतभतत तनतश्चत्य शाम्यतत ॥ ९-३॥
anityaṁ sarvamevedaṁ tāpatrayadūṣitam
asaraṁ ninditaṁ heyamiti niścitya śāmyati
All this is impermanent and spoilt by the three sorts of pain.
Recognising it to be insubstantial, comtemptible and only fit for
rejection, one attains peace.
कोऽसौ कारो वम् तकं वा मत्र द्वन्द्वातन नो नृणां ।
तान्यऩु क्ष्ये मथाप्राप्तवती तसतिभवाप्नमु ात ॥् ९-४॥
ko'sau kālo vayaḥ kiṁ vā yatra dvandvāni no nṛṇām
tānyupekṣya yathāprāptavartī siddhimavāpnuyāt
When was that age or time of life when the dualism of extremes
did not exist for men? Abandoning them, a person who is happy
to take whatever comes attains perfection.

ना भतं भहषीणां साधूनां मोतगनां तथा ।
दृष्ट्वा तनवेदभाऩन्न् को न शाम्यतत भानव् ॥ ९-५॥
nā mataṁ maharṣīṇāṁ sādhūnāṁ yogināṁ tathā
dṛṣṭvā nirvedamāpannaḥ ko na śāmyati mānavaḥ
Who does not end up with indifference to such things and attain
peace when he has seen the differences of opinions among the
great sages, saints and yogis?
कृत्वा भतू तऩभ तयऻान ं चतै न्यस्य न तकं गरुु ् ।
तनवदे सभतामक्त्यु ा मस्तायमतत ससं तृ ्े ॥ ९-६॥
kṛtvā mūrtiparijñānaṁ caitanyasya na kiṁ guruḥ
nirvedasamatāyuktyā yastārayati saṁsṛteḥ
Is he not a guru who, endowed with dispassion and equanimity,
achieves full knowledge of the nature of consciousness, and leads
others out of samsara?
ऩश्म बतू तवकायास्त्वं ं बतू भात्रान म् थाथतभ ् ।
तत्क्षणाद ्फन्धतनभिभु ् स्वरूऩस्थो बतवष्यतस ॥ ९-७॥
paśya bhūtavikārāṁstvaṁ bhūtamātrān yathārthataḥ
tatkṣaṇād bandhanirmuktaḥ svarūpastho bhaviṣyasi
If you would just see the transformations of the elements as
nothing more than the elements, then you would immediately be
freed from all bonds and established in your own nature.
वासना एव ससं ाय इतत सवा भ तवभचंु ता् ।
तत्त्यागो वासनात्यागातिततयर्द्य मथा तथा ॥ ९-८॥
vāsanā eva saṁsāra iti sarvā vimuṁca tāḥ
tattyāgo vāsanātyāgātsthitiradya yathā tathā
One's inclinations are samsara. Knowing this, abandon them. The
renunciation of them is the renunciation of it. Now you can
remain as you are.
