Chapter 10 ॥दशभोध्याम्॥

अष्टावक्र उवाच ॥
तवहाम वतैयण ं काभभथ ं चानथसभ कं ुरं ।
धभभभ प्यते मोहेत ंुसवत्रभ ादयं कुरु ॥ १०-१॥
aṣṭāvakra uvāca
vihāya vairiṇaṁ kāmamarthaṁ cānarthasaṁkulam
dharmamapyetayorhetuṁ sarvatrādaraṁ kuru
Ashtavakra: Abandoning desire, the enemy, along with gain,
itself so full of loss, and the good deeds which are the cause of
the other two - practice indifference to everything.
स्वप्नन्द्ये जारवत ऩ् श्म तदनातन त्रीतण ऩचं वा ।
तभत्रऺत्रे धनागायदायदामातदसऩं द् ॥ १०-२॥
svapnendrajālavat paśya dināni trīṇi paṁca vā
mitrakṣetradhanāgāradāradāyādisaṁpadaḥ

Look on such things as friends, land, money, property, wife, and
bequests as nothing but a dream or a magician's show lasting
three or five days.
मत्र मत्र बवेत्तृष्णा ससं ायं तवति तत्र व ै।
प्रौढवयै ाग्मभातश्रत्य वीततष्णृ ् सखु ी बव ॥ १०-३॥
yatra yatra bhavettṛṣṇā saṁsāraṁ viddhi tatra vai
prauḍhavairāgyamāśritya vītatṛṣṇaḥ sukhī Bhava
Wherever a desire occurs, see samsara in it. Establishing yourself
in firm dispassion, be free of passion and happy.
तष्णृ ाभात्रात्मको फन्धस्तन्नाशो भोऺ उच्यत े ।
बवाससं तिभात्रणे प्रातप्तततुष्टभहुभु भहुभु ् ॥ १०-४॥
tṛṣṇāmātrātmako bandhastannāśo mokṣa ucyate
bhavāsaṁsaktimātreṇa prāptituṣṭirmuhurmuhuḥ
The essential nature of bondage is nothing other than desire, and
its elimination is known as liberation. It is simply by not being
attached to changing things that the everlasting joy of attainment
is reached.
त्वभके श्चते न् शिु ो जड ं तवश्वभसत्तथा ।
अतवर्द्यातऩ न तकंतचत्सा का फबु त्सु ा तथातऩ त॥े १०-५॥
tvamekaścetanaḥ śuddho jaḍaṁ viśvamasattathā
avidyāpi na kiṁcitsā kā bubhutsā tathāpi te
You are one, conscious and pure, while all this is just inert nonbeing.
Ignorance itself is nothing, so what need have you of
desire to understand?
याज्य ं सतु ा् करत्रातण शयीयातण सखु ातन च ।
संसिस्यातऩ नष्टातन तव जन्मतन जन्मतन ॥ १०-६॥
rājyaṁ sutāḥ kalatrāṇi śarīrāṇi sukhāni ca
saṁsaktasyāpi naṣṭāni tava janmani janmani
Kingdoms, children, wives, bodies, pleasures - these have all
been lost to you, life after life, attached to them though you were.
अरभथने काभने सकु ृ तने ातऩ कभणभ ा ।
एभ्य् ससं ायकान्ताय े न तवश्रान्तभबनू भ् न् ॥ १०-७॥
alamarthena kāmena sukṛtenāpi karmaṇā
ebhyaḥ saṁsārakāntāre na viśrāntamabhūn manaḥ
Enough of wealth, sensuality and good deeds. In the forest of
samsara the mind has never found satisfaction in these.
कृतं न कतत जन्मातन कामने भनसा तगया ।
दु्खभामासद ं कभ भ तदर्द्याप्यऩु यम्यताभ ॥् १०-८॥
kṛtaṁ na kati janmāni kāyena manasā girā
duḥkhamāyāsadaṁ karma tadadyāpyuparamyatām
How many births have you not done hard and painful labour
with body, mind and speech. Now at last stop!
